SISTERS OF NIGHT AND FOG by Erika Robuck

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Buzzfeed · Bookbub · BookTrib · and more!

Two women, two countries. Nothing in common but a call to fight.

A heart-stopping new novel based on the extraordinary true stories of an American socialite and a British secret agent whose stunning acts of courage collide inthe darkest hours of World War II.

1940. In a world newly burning with war, andin spite of her American family’s wishes, Virginia d’Albert-Lake decides to stay in occupied France with her French husband. She’s sure that if they keep their heads down, they’ll survive. But is surviving enough?

Nineteen-year-old Violette Szabo has seen the Nazis’ evil up close and is desperate to fight them. But when she meets the man who’ll change her life only for tragedy to strike, Violette’s adrift. Until she enters the radar of Britain’s secret war organization—the Special Operations Executive—and a new fire is lit in her as she decides just how much she’s willing to risk to enlist.

As Virginia and Violette navigate resistance, their clandestine deeds come to a staggering halt when they are brought together at Ravensbrück concentration camp.

The decisions they make will change their lives, and the world, forever.

MY THOUGHTS

Another very good and well written historical book by Erika Robuck. This one just like her last one will leave you will lots of tears. Heartfelt sorry and wonderment. Wonderment of just how people could be so mean and cruel. Without any thoughts of what they did. Without any feelings toward the people, the humans, they slaughtered. How could there be such cruel people? How can anyone say these things did not really happen???

This is the story of two women. Violette and Virginia. Two women who lived ordinary lives. Until they didn't. Until the war happened. Until their lives changed forever. Two very brave women. Don't get me wrong, there were lots of brave women in this story. In this time period. Men also. But this story is about these two and what they went through. To survive. To help innocent people survive. To help them find freedom. To put their lives on the line. Their lives on hold. They went through things that we would never be able to survive. But they did it so hopefully we won't ever have to attempt to survive it. Each chapter is told from one of their prospectives. Through several years of horrors.

This story will bring so many tears to your eyes. So much hope to your heart. It will rip your heart out and still keep you turning the pages. The things that happened in this time are atrocious. The unthinkable. And the ultimate sacrifices. So many died. So many were unmercifully slaughtered. A few survived to tell.

This author put a lot of her heart into this story. If you read the Author's notes and the acknowledgements at the end you will see that. You will see what she went through to write this. The heartache is raw in her account of trying to tell Violette's story. How hard it was to write. Even that brought fresh tears to my eyes.

NEVER EVER FORGET... History should never be repeated. Never!

Thank you #NetGalley, #ErikaRobuck, #Berkley for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

5/5 stars and a high recommendation. Read it and have tissues handy.

THE NEXT SHIP HOME by Heather Webb

"An unflinching look at the immigrant experience, an unlikely and unique friendship, and a resonant story of female empowerment."—Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman with the Blue Star

Ellis Island, 1902: Two women band together to hold America to its promise: "Give me your tired, your poor ... your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."

A young Italian woman arrives on the shores of America, her sights set on a better life. That same day, a young American woman reports to her first day of work at the immigration center. But Ellis Island isn't a refuge for Francesca or Alma, not when ships depart every day with those who are refused entry to the country and when corruption ripples through every corridor. While Francesca resorts to desperate measures to ensure she will make it off the island, Alma fights for her dreams of becoming a translator, even as women are denied the chance.

As the two women face the misdeeds of a system known to manipulate and abuse immigrants searching for new hope in America, they form an unlikely friendship—and share a terrible secret—altering their fates and the lives of the immigrants who come after them.

This is a novel of the dark secrets of Ellis Island, when entry to "the land of the free" promised a better life but often delivered something drastically different, and when immigrant strength and female friendship found ways to triumph even on the darkest days.

Inspired by true events and for fans of Kristina McMorris and Hazel Gaynor, The Next Ship Home holds up a mirror to our own times, deftly questioning America's history of prejudice and exclusion while also reminding us of our citizens' singular determination.

MY THOUGHTS

This is my second book by Heather Webb.. It won't be my last. This book was a very touching and tough look at the things that happened on Ellis Island in 1902. Both to the female immigrants and the female employees. It's not pretty.

This story is about two young women who are starting out with new adventures in life. One an American citizen, the other an Italian immigrant. Alma is still living at home and in no hurry to marry. Her stepdad decides she needs to get a job and help support the family. He sends her to Ellis Island where she will be working with immigrants. Helping out in any way needed. It's not a pleasant joy by any means. Long hours and exhausting. But she is a hard worker.

Francesca and her sister are new to America. They fled their home and very cruel father to hopefully find a better life. When tragedy strikes Francesca has to find a way to stay in America... That is how her and Alma become the best of friends. Alma helps her. Francesca has had to endure a lot. A lot of ugly things. Being from another country does not help and in every way makes it worse. Men take advantage of her and other female immigrants.

The Next Ship Home gave me a whole different look at things that happened on Ellis Island. I never thought about these things. It just never entered my mind that people were so cruel way back then. Not a whole lot has changed it seems. Each nationality is very prejudice against the next. Men treat women like they are less than human. Life is hard for everyone. This book covers things that will make you think about that. About being a stranger in a whole new country. How scary that must be. It would be terrifying for me to have to go into another country. Unable to speak the language. Not knowing anyone. Having to fight for yourself. Having to fight for food. It had to be so scary.

This book is well written and one that makes you think. Makes you see things in a whole new way. I've read a couple of books set on Ellis Island but they never covered the atrocities that happened. The prejudice. The cruelty. It made me so sad. Made me cry to think of what these people went through.

Most of the characters are so likable. There are a few that you will detest but most are nice and have a heart. The book takes you to a place where you will feel the pain and hunger that these immigrants felt on a boat headed to a new country. How the people in the upper classes reacted to them.

Thank you #NetGalley #HeatherWebb, #Sourcebookslandmark for this ARC. This is my own true feelings about this book.

5/5 stars and a very high recommendation.

UNMISSING by Minka Kent

A return from the past knocks a family dangerously off-balance in a novel of spiraling suspense by Washington Post and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Minka Kent.

Merritt Coletto and her husband, Luca, have the life they dreamed of: a coastal home, a promising future, and a growing family. That dream ends with a late-night knock on the door.

Weak, broken, and emaciated, it’s Luca’s first wife, Lydia. Missing for ten years, presumed dead, and very much alive, she has quite a story. Her kidnapping. A torturous confinement that should’ve ended with her dead. And finally, escape. Racked with guilt over the beautiful life they’ve built, Merritt and Luca agree to help get Lydia back on her feet—it’s the least they can do.

But the more enmeshed Lydia becomes in Merritt’s family, the more questions Merritt has. What is it about Lydia that’s especially unnerving? Why hasn’t she gone to the police with her harrowing tale? What does she really want of them? The answers, when they come, are terrifying.

Because Lydia isn’t the only one with secrets.

MY THOUGHTS

My first Minka Kent book. It certainly won't be the last.

This book pulled me in from the very start and held me captive all the way through. All the twists and turns. All the surprises along the way. It does contain some talk about being raped and horribly abused but doesn't go into any detail so that should make it a safe one. It did for me...

One quote that I really liked in this story:
I was simply missing, and now I'm unmissing...

The main characters in this book are: Lydia, Merritt, Luca and Delphine.
Lydia was married to Luca for just three short months. One day she went for a hike and simply disappeared. Just vanished into thin air. She was presumed dead and after a couple of years was considered legally dead. But she was not dead. She was very much alive. And she came back to get her life back. What she finds after nine years gone is her husband  has remarried. His second wife, Delphine, is pregnant with their second child.

When Delphine opens the door and sees Lydia standing there she doesn't know what to think. She is very afraid for herself and her children. She's not totally sure it's really Lydia. Possibly a drug addict of someone from the commune who could hurt them. Even when Lydia tells her who she is Delphine is not convinced. How could she be alive after all that time. And if she was alive where had she been. Why is she just now coming back...

Luca is the husband of both Lydia and Merritt. He's away when Lydia first comes back so is very surprised when he comes in and she's there. He has worked hard to build his business and make a life for his wife and children. He doesn't know what to think of Lydia's sudden appearance. Where has she been and why now. Why after nine years is she suddenly here. He loves his life and his family. Nothing has prepared him for this.

Delphine has a business in town and helps Lydia out when she applies for a job. She gives her a place to live until she can get on her feet. She's a wonderful woman who you will really like a lot.
I liked all the characters to a point. I found Merritt to be a bit petty and brash in ways. Too hung up on trying to impress Lydia. Luca was a jerk and a bit self centered. At least for a while. I didn't really like either him or Merritt but they do play a very important role in this book.

This book is told from Lydia and Merritt's POVs. Each telling a story that is unbelievable. A story that will have you on the edge. Have you feeling sorry for each of them. They both have a lot to lose and a lot to gain. Lydia doesn't know that Luca and Merritt are in a bind where money is concerned. She only wants something to help her start over. Build a life for herself. After all she has been through she definitely deserves that.

I found this story to be very good. A page turner. There was so many twists that I never guessed who did what to whom. I didn't figure out who the kidnapper was nor what actually happened that day. It was good to read one that gave me so many surprises.

Thank you #NetGalley, #MinkaKent, #Thomas&Mercer for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

5/5 stars and a very high recommendation. Grab this one and get lost in the story of what happened to Lydia... It's very good.

THE OVERNIGHT GUESTS by Heather Gudenkauf

THE OVERNIGHT GUEST

“Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful...The journey is mesmerizing.”New York Times

A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to
find them.

Heather Gudenkauf is the critically acclaimed author of several novels, including the New York Times bestseller The Weight of Silence. She lives in Iowa with her family.

Three

“Maybe we can go outside and play?” the girl said as she peeked around the edge of the heavy curtain that covered the window. The sky was gray and soft drops of rain tapped at the glass.

“Not today,” her mother said. “It’s raining and we’d melt.”

The girl gave a little laugh and then hopped off the chair she had dragged beneath the window. She knew her mother was teasing. They wouldn’t actually melt if they went out in the rain, but still, it made her shiver thinking about it—stepping outside and feeling the plop of water on your skin and watching it melt away like an ice cube.

Instead, the girl and her mother spent the morning at the card table cutting pink, purple, and green egg shapes from construction paper and embellishing them with polka dots and stripes.

On one oval, her mother drew eyes and a pointy little orange beak. Her mother laid the girl’s hands on a piece of yellow paper and traced around them using a pencil. “Watch,” she said as she cut out the handprints and then glued them to the back of one of the ovals.

“It’s a bird,” the girl said with delight.

“An Easter chick,” her mother said. “I made these when I was your age.”

Together, they carefully taped the eggs and chicks and bunny rab-bits they created to the cement walls, giving the dim room a festive, springy look. “There, now we’re ready for the Easter Bunny,” her mother said with triumph.

That night, when the girl climbed into bed, the butterflies in her stomach kept chasing sleep away. “Stay still,” her mother kept re-minding her. “You’ll fall asleep faster.”

The girl didn’t think that was true, but then she opened her eyes, a sliver of bright sunshine was peeking around the shade, and the girl knew that morning had finally arrived.

She leaped from bed to find her mother already at the tiny round table where they ate their meals. “Did he come?” the girl asked, tucking her long brown hair behind her ears.

“Of course he did,” her mother said, holding out a basket woven together from strips of colored paper. It was small, fitting into the palm of the girl’s hand, but sweet. Inside were little bits of green paper that were cut to look like grass. On top of this was a pack of cinnamon gum and two watermelon Jolly Ranchers.

The girl smiled though disappointment surged through her. She’d been hoping for a chocolate bunny or one of those candy eggs that oozed yellow when you broke it open.

“Thank you,” she said.

“Thank the Easter Bunny,” her mother said.

“Thank you, Easter Bunny,” the girl crowed like the child on the candy commercials that she’d seen on television. They both laughed.

They each unwrapped a piece of gum and spent the morning making up stories about the paper chicks and bunnies they made.

When the girl’s gum lost its flavor, and she had slowly licked one of the Jolly Ranchers into a sharp flat disc, the door at the top of the steps opened, and her father came down the stairs toward them. He was carrying a plastic bag and a six-pack of beer. Her mother gave the girl a look. The one that said, go on now, mom and dad need some alone time. Obediently, the girl, taking her Easter basket, went to her spot beneath the window and sat in the narrow beam of warm light that fell across the floor. Facing the wall, she unwrapped another piece of gum and poked it into her mouth and tried to ignore the squeak of the bed and her father’s sighs and grunts.

“You can turn around now,” her mother finally said. The girl sprang up from her spot on the floor.

The girl heard the water running in the bathroom, and her father poked his head out of the door. “Happy Easter,” he said with a grin. “The Easter Bunny wanted me to give you a little something.”

The girl looked at the kitchen table where the plastic bag sat. Then she slid her eyes to her mother, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, rubbing her wrist, eyes red and wet. Her mother nodded.

“Thank you,” she murmured.

Later, after her father climbed the steps and locked the door behind him, the girl went to the table and looked inside the plastic bag. In-side was a chocolate bunny with staring blue eyes. He was holding a carrot and wore a yellow bowtie.

“Go ahead,” her mother told the girl as she held an ice pack to her wrist. “When I was little, I always started with the ears.”

“I don’t think I’m very hungry,” the girl said, returning the box to the table.

“It’s okay,” her mother said gently. “You can eat it. It’s from the Easter Bunny, not your dad.”

The girl considered this. She took a little nibble from the bunny’s ear and sweet chocolate flooded her mouth. She took another bite and then another. She held out the rabbit to her mother and she bit off the remaining ear in one big bite. They laughed and took turns eating until all that was left was the bunny’s chocolate tail.

“Close your eyes and open your mouth,” her mother said. The girl complied and felt her mother place the remaining bit on her tongue and then kiss her on the nose. “Happy Easter,” her mother whispered.

MY THOUGHTS

Where do I start? This book was the best one yet by this author and that is saying so much. She is such a wonderful and gifted author. Her writing keeps you wanting more. Turning the pages to find out what is coming. This book is the edge of your seat thriller with so much passion and emotion you won't want to put it down. The characters come to life. The story is so real. Like one you would read about in the headline news. You get to know these characters. Feel their love and of course all of their pain and sorrow. The tragedies that befall them. The hurt, sadness and deep loss.

My very favorite line in this book is:
"My name is Josie."
Another favorite quote:
It isn't the dark you have to be afraid of, the girl thought, it's the monsters who step out into the light that you need to fear.

Josie and Becky are best friends. The night their lives changed forever is the plot of this story. The thing that will keep you turning the pages. The horror that will make you not want to put this book down. To find out who did it. Who could possibly do such a heinous thing to a family. Take Josie's life from her. Take Becky's life from her. Take their childhood without a thought. Without any feelings.

This book takes you into the life of a writer. A writer named Wylie. She's here to finish her book. To tell a story. Things take a crazy turn when she discovers a child. A child in the snow who could very easily have frozen to death. Wylie brings the child in and her life will never be the same. In one night her world is turned upside down. So many things are going to happen. Lives will be changed forever.

This night is filled with horrors. With much sadness and lots of fears. Also maybe a bit of hope will shine through if they make it until morning. One thing is for sure. They will never be the same two people. This little child who is saved from the freezing blizzard by this woman who was not looking for anything but the peach and quiet to finish her book.

This story is told from three different time frames. In twenty somewhat years lives were torn apart and no one in these families were ever the same again. A woman and child in a basement. Josie and Becky running for their lives. Wylie and a child in the dark trying to survive a blizzard in a house where people had been slaughtered. Who will survive this night? Who will pay the price for what happened all those years ago? Who will live to tell the story of THE OVERNIGHT GUEST?

This book is excellent. Well written and a true edge of your seat thriller. Filled from start to finish with twists and turns that will have you guessing. Holding your breath. Shedding a lot of tears. A story of love, loss and inhumane grief. Sadness and tragedy. It does have some happy parts too though. Before it all fell apart that is. You have to read this one. It's a must for your list!

Thank you #NetGalley, #HeatherGudenkauf, #Harlequin, #harperCollins, #ParkRow for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts.

5/5 HUGE stars and truly a book you don't want to miss. It grabs you and doesn't let go.

MY THOUGHTS
This is a series and I did not realize that. I wish I would have had the chance to read the first few books so I would have honestly understood who each of these characters were. The main two characters that is. Kane and Jenna. Both are with the police. One a special opps and the other a sheriff.

This story starts out with Jenna telling  Kane who she was. What went on in her past. What she went through while undercover. Being married to the son of the head of the Cartel.  Taking beatings when she certainly could have fought back and hurt the man. What her life was like before. Before she had to give up her life and go into witness protection.

This book definitely has the potential to be great. It was very much edge of your seat for the first half and the last part. The between parts kind of let me down but it was still good. It would have been way better if I had read the whole series though. I would have know how Jenna came to be undercover. Married Michael Carlos. Gone through so much. It would have explained the nightmare at the beginning. The prologue. That part pulled me in so completely then I was left wondering what happened. But it was still a good story.

This story deals with a lot of things from drug running to children being sold for sex. A family who can destroy you in a second and never blink an eye. A woman who managed to infiltrate  them and come out alive. Who went on to have a life. To help others. It's an edge of your seat thriller in so many places.

Thank you #NetGalley, #DKHood, #Bookouture for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

3.5 out of 5 stars for me. I recommend you read some of the previous books so you know exactly what is going on. It's still good and I believe you will enjoy this one. It did fall a bit short for me because I needed more info about some things. Still it was good.
