Normally I do not like fantasy but WOW.... This book is so good. It has everything that I love in a good story. I read along while listening to the audio and it was like watching a movie in so many ways. I had so many emotions. Times that made me gasp. A few tears. Even some laughter. Wonderful characters. And it is even a love story. Great writing. Great feelings. A great all around story.
This author did such a good job of writing this story that you just don't see it as a fantasy alone. It has much more going on. And yes... it has DRAGONS!! You get to know the characters. Even the dragons. They become a bit personal to you. Worm their way into your heart. And yes there are some characters that you won't like at all. But overall they are mostly wonderful.
You go into training with the main character. Violet is a General's daughter. She's got a few things that can hold her back but is forced into being a rider. She always planned on being a Scribe but her mother had different plans and Violet has no choice. She is determined to live. To show her mother that she can do this.
I can't brag on this book enough. It was just wonderful. From the first page to the last and I can't wait to start the next book. So well written and action packed. The best fantasy book I've ever read. Not that I've read many but still... I loved the dragons in this book. They become such an integral part of this story and make you love them. At least they did me.
The only thing that I didn't like was the narrators. I think they could have been so much better. While they kept me listening it was just not as good as it should have been. It didn't take away from the book, maybe because I was reading at the same time. It was a very intense book in parts. Had me holding my breath wondering if things were going to work out ok. And what an ending/not ending. It doesn't exactly end since there is another book, Iron Flame, but still... I also heard there will be three more after that. And possibly a series. We can hope. There are also two chapters added at the end of the special addition book. Xaden's words.
I had to give this book 5 stars. It deserves them. It's truly that good. And as long as the book is listening to it made it go fast. I loved it.
Synopsis
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die
