The Cicada Tree by Robert Gwaltney

My thoughts

A first book by this author. It's so hard to believe this is a first. It was so good. A WOW book. It took my breath away.

In a town in Providence, Georgia there are a few secrets. A lot of gossip as usually goes in small towns. Grace is Analeise's mother. She can tell things from the threads in clothing she makes. Tell when something is going to happen to the person. Analeise is a happy go lucky child of eleven. She's a smart child and full of mischief. Her friend Etta Mae follows her everywhere. Etta Mae's mother is the sassy and tough Miss Wessie. Etta Mae and Miss Wessie live with Grace and Analeise.

Cordelia Mayfield is Marlissa's mother. They are rich. Very rich. They are so rich that people from far away come into town if they have a party. They are the kind of people that young girls like Analeise admires. But there are mysteries surrounding the Mayfields. Things that Cordelia would rather keep secret. Marlissa is a bit of a bully to Analeise.

This is a story of family. The ones that don't have the riches seem way happier than the ones who seem to have it all. I love the way this story flowed. The way it played out and made you see and feel many things. From hope, sadness, laughter and forgiveness. A story to take your breath away for sure. Robert Gwaltney did a fantastic job writing this novel. The descriptions were perfect. Made you feel what the characters were feeling. Feel the burn of fire. Hear the clicking of the Cicadas. The crunch of them underfoot. The hugs from the loving mothers. The laughter of children. The silliness of the boys playing football with a pinecone.

I throughly enjoyed this book. It is one that will be in my top ten of the year.

Five big stars. I highly recommend this book.

About

WHEN AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD, WHISKY DRINKING, PIANO PRODIGY ENCOUNTERS A WEALTHY FAMILY POSSESSING SUPERNATURAL BEAUTY, HER ENSUING OBSESSION UNLEASHES FAMILY SECRETS AND A CATACLYSMIC PLAGUE OF CICADAS.

The summer of 1956, a brood of cicadas descends upon Providence, Georgia, a natural event with supernatural repercussions, unhinging the life of Analeise Newell, an eleven-year-old piano prodigy. Amidst this emergence, dark obsessions are stirred, uncanny gifts provoked, and secrets unearthed.
During a visit to Mistletoe, a plantation owned by the wealthy Mayfield family, Analeise encounters Cordelia Mayfield and her daughter Marlissa, both of whom possess an otherworldly beauty, a lineal trait regarded as that Mayfield Shine. A whisper and an act of violence perpetrated during this visit by Mrs. Mayfield all converge to kindle Analeise’s fascination with the Mayfields.
Analeise’s burgeoning obsession with the Mayfield family overshadows her own seemingly, ordinary life, culminating in dangerous games and manipulation, setting off a chain of cataclysmic events with life-altering consequences—all of it unfolding to the maddening whir of a cicada song.
